The Kerama Islands are a group of 22 islets located 32 kilometers Southwest of Okinawa, JAPAN. They are known of its fascinating sea view with the surrounding coral reefs. Thus, just recently, it was declared as the national marine park in JAPAN.

Diving Point: Dragon Lady, Zamami Island

Bicolor Parrotfish JP (Cetoscarus bicolor): Up to 5-9 cm (2-3 1/2 in.); White with broad orange bar encircling head from eye to rear gill cover, large orange-edge black spot on dorsal fin, orange outer rim on tail; Solitary.
The Pacific Cleaner Shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis): Up to 5-6 cm; this omnivorous shrimp has light amber with one dorsal, white and two lateral, red longitudinal bands; there are two white spots on each side of the tail; the telson is white, too; the four antennae are white and as long as the body; the vivid white and red colours are signals for conspecifics as well as for the fish to be cleaned.
Striped Triplefin (Helcogramma striatum): Up to 5 cm (2 in.); Red with whitish lower body, 3 white or bluis white stripes, bright yellow iris; Solitary or small groups.
Spangled Emperor (Lethrinus nebulosus): Up to 80 cm (2 3/4 ft.); Elongated pointed snout; pale gray with blue to white scale centers, blue streaks on cheek; Solitary to large groups. Flat sand bottoms in the vicinity of reefs to 75m; also frequent seagrass beds and mangrove areas.
Fivelined Cardinalfish (Cheilodipterus quinquelineatus): Up to 12 cm (5 in.); Light gray to whitish with 5 black stripes; yellow tail base with black spot in line with mid-lateral stripe; Lack canine teeth at front of lower jaw; Form aggregations.
Black-Banded Sea Krait (Laticauda semifasciata): known as ‘erabu umi hebi’ in JAPAN; this short-neck, thick-trunk erabu snake frequents coral reefs; it is a nocturnal snake and rarely seen during the day; it requires oxygen to breathe underwater so it goes up the surface for at lease once every six hours.
Raccoon Butterflyfish (Chaetodon lunula): Up to 21 cm (8 in.); Yellow-orange, with dusky back and thin dark diagonal bands, black eye band with white patch behind, connected to wide black band running to dorsal fin; Solitary, in pairs or aggregations.

Sabre Squirrelfish (Sargocentron spiniferum): Up to 45 cm (18 in.); Large; red with vertical silvery streak on each scale, anal and ventral fins often yellowish; prominent cheek spine. Solitary or in pairs; often inside caves and ledges.
Glassy Cardinalfish ( Rhabdamia spilota): Up to 6 cm (2 1/2 in.); translucent body with silver sheen on head and belly, small dark spot above pectoral fin base, 1-2 faint brownish stripes on side of front of body. Form small groups.
Spotted Garden Eel (Heteroconger hassi): Up to 70 cm (2 1/4 ft.); Whitish with dense covering of small black spots, large black patch over gill opening, on back and over anus. Form large colonies on sandy bottoms in lagoons and around seaward reefs in 5-50 m.
Redbreasted Wrasse ( Cheilinus fasciatus): Up to 36 cm (14 1/4 in.); Red-orange rear head and forebody, alternating white and blackish bars on body and tail; Solitary.

Yellowmargin Moray (Gymnothorax flavimarginatus): Up to 150 cm (5 ft.); Yellowish orange body densely mottled with dark brown, dark purplish brown front of head, black blotch over gill openign, orange iris; Solitary and curious, head frequently protrudes from reef recess.
Highfin Grouper (Epinephelus maculatus) -Juvenile-: Up to 5-12 cm (2-5 in.); Dark brown with some yellowish tint, especially on fins, widely spaced large blackfish and white spots, white saddles on nape (largest), mid-back and tail base; Young are found close to coral outcroppings and debris.
Steinitz’ Shrimpgoby (Amblyeleotris steinitzi): Up to 8 cm (3 in.); White with 5 brown bars on head and body, dark iris, tiny yellow spots on both dorsal fins, narrow oranges bars between dark body bars; Share burrow with alpheid shrimp.
Orangeband Surgeonfish (Acanthurus olivaceus): Up to 35 cm (14 in.); Light gray head and forebody, dark gray behind, blue-edged elliptical orange band behind upper gill cover; Solitary or from groups.
Slender Lizardfish (Saurida gracilis): Up to 28 cm (11 in.); Mottled gray to brown, 3 dark or diffuse bars on rear body, line pattern on lips and visible teeth when mouth closed; Solitary or silty bottoms near protected reefs to 12 m.
Coral Grouper (Cephalopholis miniata): Up to 41 cm (16 in.); Orange-red to reddish brown with numerous dark-edged blue spots, a narrow blue margin on all fins except pectorals, occasionally display pale bars; Solitary.
Honeycomb Grouper (Epinephelus merra): Up to 32 cm (13 in.); White undercolor with polygonal spots in varying shades of brown, no distinctive markings; Solitary.

Blue-Spot Butterflyfish (Chaetodon plebeius): Up to 15 cm (6 in.); it’s bright yellow with numerous faint stripes, blue patch on side, ocellated spot on base of tail, and blue-edged eye bar.
Jewel Damsel (Plectroglyphidodon lacrymatus): Up to 10 cm (4 in.): Brown with black scale margins, often gradating to tan or whitish on rear body and tail, small blue spots scattered on head and body.
Pinnate Spadefish (Platax pinnatus): Up to 37 cm (15 in.); Silver, black eye bar and a second bar through pectoral and onto ventral fin, distinctive protruding snout.

Yellowfin Goatfish (Mulloidichthys vanicolensis): Up to 38 cm (15 in.); Bluish white with yellowish back, yellow fins, yellow stripe from eye to tail base; Form stationary daytime aggregations, but solitary when feeding on sand-dwelling animals at night.

Clown Triggerfish (Balistodes conspicillum): Up to 50 cm (19 3/4 in.); Black undercolor with large white spots on lower body, orange lips, yellowish band across top of snout, pale patch with dark spots on back.
Purple Queen (Pseudanthias pascalus): Up to 17 cm (5 3/4 in.); Purple with numerous small dark blue to orange spots, yellowish snout forming fleshy protuberance and pale chin.
Green Sea Turtle (Ao umigame): Up to 1.3 m; an endangered specie; Is actually named for the greenish color underneath their shells rather than the shells themselves.

Fiji Anemonefish (Amphiprion sp.): Up to 13cm(5in.); Entirely red-orange with white head bar.
Big Longnose Butterflyfish (Forcipiger longirostris): Up to 22 cm(8 3/4 in.); Yellow with black upper head and silvery white below, extremely elongated snout, black spots on breast, spot on anal fin below tail base.
Clark’s Anemonefish (Amphiprion clarkii) – Orange Variation: Up to 12 cm (5 in.); Exhibit variable amounts of yellow-orange. Coloration is influenced by the host anemone species.
Reef Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa): Up to 35 cm (14 in.); Globular and poorly defined, appear as algae-covered stone, prominent warts and skin flaps, eyes far apart with deep pit between; Venomous fin spines deadly and may bury in sand.
False Clown Anemonefish (Amphiprion ocellaris): Up to 9 cm (3 1/2 in.); Orange with 3 white bars, middle bar has forward-projecting bulge, variable amounts of black edging on bars and fins.
